When Is It Time To Get Help?

How does one know when the right time has come to get your loved one professional care? Sometimes it is not that easy as elderly people have good days and bad days. In other cases it is more obvious such as when a loved one has suffered a serious health setback and care is required right away.

But when one is still unsure, our view is to start addressing this question with a loved one sooner rather than later and to have a plan. Leaving this too late can have serious consequences like when a person sustains a serious injury due to a fall or the likes.

By engaging a loved one in this decision allows them to give their inputs and does not make them feel as if they are forced into a decision. This allows them time to digest the matter and makes them more accepting to the fact that they need care down the line.

Leaving it too late could result in having to make hasty decisions without having options to consider and turning lives upside down.

Conversations To Be Had With A Loved One.

Getting help is not a sign of weakness.

When a loved one is struggling with certain daily tasks, it may be time to consider getting help. A loved one can have a better quality of life with an unobtrusive caregiver helping around the house. Getting injured or suffering a health setback is a real risk without a caregiver to help at home. These issues can be easily prevented.

A serious injury can upend their life.

A serious injury from trying to do everything on their own, could drastically change their lives. Preventing a serious injury makes more sense than having to undergo a major surgery at an advanced age or rehabilitation or being confined to a wheelchair. This also leads to unnecessary medical bills and financial strain.

Enjoy your familiar surroundings for longer.

This makes sense when considering assisted living for a loved one. A caregiver enables a loved one to stay in their home for longer. It has been proven that a loved one prefers to live in surroundings they are familiar with and it also leads to a much better state of mental well-being and a happier patient. This also makes for an easier transition to total care.

Full-time versus Part-time care?

Maybe your loved one is still quite capable to perform most tasks and therefor does not require a full-time caregiver. A loved one may be more receptive to this as they value their independence, but at the same time enjoy quality of live with an unobtrusive part-time caregiver. This can change to full-time down the line.

What do they want?

It is important to also listen to what they want as it allows for a much better buy-in from a loved one. Forcing someone into a decision will lead to a lot of pushback, but getting their inputs will make them feel part of the process and more willing to accept change in their lives. There may be resistance to change at first, but there will be less if everyone's opinions are considered.

Can a caregiver be trusted?

This is a very common and valid question. A loved one's fear can be put to rest by the fact that Domestic Angels only employ caregivers that have been thoroughly trained by our team of professional nurses that have many years of experience. We also go to great lengths to properly vet our caregivers and to ensure that references from previous employers are checked and are very favourable.

Should the children care for the parents?

Quite often, children don't live near their elderly parents, so it's not always feasible to be a family caregiver. Trying to be a family caregiver places huge amounts of pressure on family relationships and disrupts routines of adults and small children. Children of elderly parents may also have work commitments which could lead to added stress. A family member providing care is just not in the best interests of an elderly loved one.

What are the costs?

Having a caregiver look after someone in the comfort of their own home is considerably less than moving into a total care facility. Care facilities are very expensive. This could place a huge financial burden on families and impact quality of life. Furthermore, a loved one may feel that some of their independence has been taken away prematurely after being moved to a total care facility.
